Applications are now open for the Mastercard Foundation Masters Scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year at Makerere University. This initiative seeks to expand access to higher education and empower 1,000 young Africans to contribute to regional and national development.
As part of the program, Mastercard Foundation will offer scholarships at Makerere University’s main campus for both undergraduate and graduate students over a ten-year period. The program is designed to support academically talented young men and women from Sub-Saharan Africa who face financial barriers to obtaining a university education.
Scholarship Benefits
Recipients of this scholarship will receive comprehensive support, including:
- Coverage of tuition and other university fees
- Laptops, books, and essential learning materials
- Accommodation, bedding, and meals
- Medical insurance
- Monthly stipend
- Travel expenses between home and the university
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Ugandan national, refugee, student with a disability, internally displaced youth, or an international applicant from Africa
- Have applied for admission to Makerere University for the 2025/2026 academic year
- Have completed undergraduate studies in an African country
- Demonstrate financial need
- Not currently hold any other scholarship
- Must not be enrolled in or have completed a master’s degree
- Show leadership potential and a history of community service
- Be no older than 35 years at the time of application (applicants with disabilities or refugees can apply up to the age of 40)
- Refugee applicants must possess a Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation document
- Have applied for a master’s program that is prioritized under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
