The German Bundestag International Parliamentary Scholarship Programme 2026 is now open for applications. This initiative is designed for young university graduates from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal who have a strong interest in politics and social engagement. The program provides an opportunity to gain insight into Germany’s parliamentary system while fostering democratic leadership skills.

Since 2020, under the leadership of the Bundestag President, this scholarship has been empowering politically aware and forward-thinking individuals from sub-Saharan Africa. It offers them the tools and experiences necessary to contribute to democratic governance in their home countries.

Program Details

The program will take place from January 5 to February 3, 2026, in Berlin. A key component is a one-week internship in the office of a Bundestag member, where participants will learn about parliamentary procedures, decision-making processes, and the role of legislators. Additionally, scholars will engage in discussions on pluralism, minority rights, and historical awareness. Various workshops will cover topics such as anti-corruption, intercultural communication, and project management, equipping participants with skills to lead civic initiatives.

Scholarship Coverage

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A €700 stipend
  • Free housing in a residential complex
  • Round-trip travel expenses to Berlin
  • Comprehensive insurance (health, accident, and liability)

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, candidates must:

  • Hold citizenship in one of the participating countries (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda)
  • Be under 30 years old by January 1, 2026
  • Have completed a university degree
  • Possess B2-level German language proficiency or higher
  • Show a strong commitment to political and social issues

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit their documents as a PDF file via email to the German embassy in their respective countries. The PDF file must not exceed 10 MB. If necessary, split the documents into multiple emails. ZIP files will not be accepted.

A complete application includes:

  • Completed and signed application form (in German)
  • Valid proof of German language skills (issued within the last two years)
  • Handwritten and signed motivation letter (maximum two pages, in German)
  • Copy of passport or national ID
  • University degree certificate (original or certified copy in English or German)
  • Recommendation letter from a professor, teacher, or employer (in German or English)
