Applications are open for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships 2025. Since 1917, this fellowship program has supported women from around the world who wish to pursue full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States. It is aimed at individuals who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who plan to return to their home countries to build professional careers.
A limited number of fellowships are also available for members of Graduate Women International who wish to study outside the U.S. (except in their home country). These awards cover both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited institutions in the U.S.
Fellowship Amounts
- Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000
- Doctoral: $25,000
- Postdoctoral: $50,000
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the U.S., or hold a nonimmigrant visa if currently residing in the U.S. (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or dual citizens are ineligible).
- Must hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree by the application deadline.
- Plan to dedicate themselves full-time to their studies during the fellowship year.
- Plan to return to their home country after completion to pursue a career.
- English proficiency must be demonstrated through required documents, such as English proficiency test results, transcripts from English-speaking institutions, or a statement confirming English as the applicant’s native language. Those taking an accepted test are encouraged to complete it as early as possible.
- Master’s and doctoral candidates must have applied to an accredited institution by the AAUW application deadline and must include the institution’s name in their fellowship application. Although acceptance isn’t required at application, proof of admission must be provided upon accepting the fellowship award.
Selection Criteria
Special consideration is given to applicants residing in their home country, those from developing or underrepresented regions, or those actively involved in advancing women and girls’ rights. Selection factors include:
- Plans for returning to home country
- Academic and professional achievements
- Demonstrated dedication to the advancement of women and girls in their home country
- Practical and well-timed study or research plan
- Prior community or civic engagement
- The applicant’s home country’s need for their skills or expertise
- Financial necessity
- Motivation to pursue graduate study or research
