The UNFCCC Secretariat is excited to announce that applications are now open for the CAPACITY Fellowship Programme 2025, part of the Capacity Award Programme to Advance Capabilities and Institutional Training in one Year. This initiative is aimed at building local expertise and enhancing the capacity of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to meet the pressing challenges of climate change.
This fellowship is specifically designed for mid-career professionals who are currently employed in governmental roles within SIDS or LDCs. The programme offers an immersive work and training experience at the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, for a period of one year, with the possibility of extending up to two years. Fellows are individually selected with the clear understanding that the skills and knowledge acquired will be utilized within their home organizations, ultimately contributing to more effective climate action.
Programme Goals:
- Advancing Climate Change Initiatives: Support the climate action efforts of developing nations in line with the UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement.
- Facilitating Cooperation: Enhance bilateral and multilateral dialogue on climate-related issues.
- Empowering Institutions: Strengthen institutional capacities to enable effective participation in global climate governance.

With financial support from the Governments of Italy and Portugal, the UNFCCC Secretariat has opened three CAPACITY Fellowship positions in the following areas:

- Means of Implementation Division
- Adaptation Division

Eligibility Requirements:
To be considered for the CAPACITY Fellowship Programme, candidates must:
- Be employed by a governmental organization (national, regional, provincial, or local) or an affiliated entity such as educational or research institutes and ministries.
- Hold nationality from an eligible LDC or SIDS country (UN member states only).
- Be no older than 40 years as of the closing date for applications.
Additional requirements include:
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English.
- Familiarity with at least one additional UN official language is preferred.
- This programme is targeted at professionals rather than students, and it does not provide support for advanced degree work like PhD fieldwork.
- The UNFCCC Secretariat values diversity, inclusiveness, and gender equity.
