Nyerere Scholarship at University of Edinburgh 2025 for Tanzanians

The Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to announce the Nyerere Scholarship for 2025. This opportunity is open to Tanzanian students applying for the MSc in Africa and International Development program.

The scholarship offers financial support to a gifted Tanzanian graduate, inspired by the legacy of Julius Nyerere, to pursue their studies at the University of Edinburgh. The recipient will receive full funding for a one-year postgraduate program in the multidisciplinary MSc in Africa and International Development.

Established in 2020, the Nyerere Scholarship has been awarded to four outstanding candidates to date. It was created by Prof. D. Bryceson, an alumnus of the University of Dar es Salaam, in honour of President J.K. Nyerere, who commenced his master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh in 1949.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Tuition Fees: Fully covered.
  • Annual Stipend: Paid at the UKRI rate (the amount for 2024/25 is £19,237, subject to confirmation for 2025). Stipend payments are made monthly into a UK bank account after full matriculation.
  • Duration: Funding is provided for one year and cannot be combined with other scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be Tanzanian citizens residing in Tanzania.
  • Have graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam between 2022 and 2024 or be set to graduate in 2025.
  • Have secured admission to the full-time MSc Africa and International Development program.

The application deadline is 23:59 GMT on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

Applicants must first apply for admission to the University of Edinburgh to gain access to the scholarship application portal. Please note that it may take up to five working days after submitting the admission application for system checks to be completed and access granted.
