Seniors and alumni of Worcester, Massachusetts public high schools can earn $5,000 in scholarships plus paid internship opportunities at AbbVie Bioresearch Center from the AbbVie Community Equity Scholarship program.
Applicants must be current seniors or graduates of Worcester’s 13 public high schools who have been accepted into full-time undergraduate study for the upcoming academic year, and who are first-generation college students who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino or American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. In addition, applicants must have registered or plan to register for two or more STEM-related courses in the upcoming academic year.
Two awards of $5,000 each are available, and financial need will be considered.
Eligibility
Applicants to the AbbVie Community Equity Scholarship must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Be a high school senior enrolled in one of Worcester Massachusetts’ 13 public high schools. Or be a graduate or current undergraduate student who has attended and graduated from said high schools
- Have been accepted for enrollment in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school for the entire upcoming academic year
- Have registered or plan to register for two or more STEM-related courses in the upcoming academic year. Plan to pursue studies or a career in a STEM field
- Be a first-generation college student*
- Self-identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino or American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
Children and grandchildren of AbbVie Bioresearch Center, Inc. or any of its affiliates are ineligible.
*Neither parent having earned an Associate degree or higher.
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic record
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- An online recommendation
Financial need will be considered. Applicants must demonstrate need.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of AbbVie Bioresearch Center, Inc. play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
Required Materials
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than January 11, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.
If you are a current undergraduate student, to verify you graduated from one of the Worcester Massachusetts’s 13 public schools, please upload your high school transcript along with your current undergraduate transcript.

Awards
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award. Up to two (2) awards will be granted.
This program includes a paid internship the summer following receipt at AbbVie’s Worcester location as part of the eligibility requirements.
Awards are one-time only. Past recipients may not reapply.
Awards are for undergraduate study only.
Notification
All applicants will be notified in March
