The Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) is inviting applications from qualified individuals to become Country Researchers for its 2025 program. This is a unique and paid opportunity to support global efforts to promote responsible, rights-based AI governance in over 140 countries and jurisdictions.

As a Country Researcher, you will play a vital role in collecting, analysing, and documenting evidence on your country’s commitment to responsible AI. Your work will directly influence global understanding and policy development around AI ethics, human rights, and digital governance.

About the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI)

The Global Index on Responsible AI, led by the Global Centre on AI Governance, is an innovative initiative that tracks and measures how countries are advancing responsible AI practices. By gathering comprehensive data across multiple thematic areas, GIRAI offers insights into national efforts to address the ethical, legal, and social implications of artificial intelligence.

GIRAI is more than a research tool—it’s a global platform that empowers governments, civil society, and stakeholders to build accountable and inclusive AI ecosystems.

Responsibilities of a Country Researcher

As a selected researcher, you will be expected to:

Collect primary data on AI governance within your designated country using GIRAI’s survey tools and structured questionnaires.
Participate in mandatory training sessions focused on responsible AI principles, human rights, and the GIRAI methodology.
Use a detailed Researcher Handbook to understand definitions, frameworks, and processes involved in data collection.
Ensure compliance with quality standards, maintain data integrity, and meet deadlines established by the GIRAI team and Regional Hubs.
Investigate and document policies, actions, and contributions from both governmental and non-governmental actors in advancing responsible AI.

The data collected will be used to assess progress in multiple thematic areas aligned with democratic and human rights-based AI principles.

Benefits and Compensation

Researchers will receive competitive compensation, which varies based on their country and workload:

Payment Range: $1,000 to $3,000 USD
Amount is based on the volume of data to be assessed and the local cost of living
Participants will gain global exposure, join a vast international research network, and contribute meaningfully to AI ethics research

Eligibility Criteria

Ideal candidates should possess the following:

Deep understanding of AI governance, ethics, and policy, particularly within their country of residence
Strong research experience, especially in AI, digital policy, data protection, or responsible technology
Knowledge of local AI policy developments and stakeholder engagement
Excellent written and spoken English, plus fluency in one or more local languages
Experience in document analysis, online data collection, and evidence-based research
Ability to work independently and meet research standards
No conflicts of interest that could compromise objectivity
A reliable internet connection (minimum 25 Mbps)
Availability to commit 60–80 hours between October and December 2025, with mandatory training in September 2025
