Position description
The British Embassy Vienna – UK Mission to the United Nations is part of a network, representing British political interests overseas. We are currently looking for a Political Attaché who is a dynamic self-starter with excellent communication skills, to cover a period of maternity leave for the jobholder.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the team promoting UK values and policies at the United Nations and the associated International Organisations (UKMis). Specifically, the job holder will be the lead policy officer for the UK’s engagement at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) and lead on the nuclear energy and applications portfolios at the IAEA. The job holder will also provide some administrative cover as required.
Your role and responsibilities will include:
- Attendance and representation at meetings of the CTBTO, reporting to the UK Ministry of Defence, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and other relevant UK institutions.
- Promoted UK interests in nuclear energy, applications, and technical cooperation at the International Atomic Energy Agency, represented the UK at relevant meetings, and reported to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
- Covering for other team members in the UK mission as appropriate.
- Providing cover for the Administrative Support Officer in their absence.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Our ideal candidate shows the following:
- Full written and spoken proficiency in English at a C1 level (according to CEFR*)
- Education to graduate (university) level within a related field of study.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and negotiation dexterity.
- Good research skills, plus the ability to write fluent and concise reports in English.
- Ability to develop and maintain networks.
- Initiative, demonstrating flexibility and working effectively within a team.
- Effective time management and ability to respond to changing priorities and tight deadlines.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Previous experience within international organisations or other multilateral organisations is desirable.

Other benefits and conditions of employment
This is a country-based staff position at the UK Mission to the United Nations, at the British Embassy in Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week) fixed-term contract, to cover a maternity leave period, until the current job-holder returns to the role. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year we are committed to ensuring a work/life balance.
The cost of the Vienna yearly transport ticket is reimbursed (prorated for months in the role),
This position is based around formal and informal meetings of Member States of the IAEA and CTBTO. These take place in person, frequently and unpredictably, which would make it difficult to maintain a formalised flexible working pattern without impacting on the other members of our small team. We support the use of informal flexible working arrangements to help staff manage their time and their work-life balance. Team members regularly work from home or remotely in line with the current flexible working policy and operational requirements.
The monthly salary will be €4,633 gross, payable 14 times a year (prorated for the 13th and 14th month as applicable). You will receive your salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities. However, in some cases you will receive an abated salary where dual taxation agreements apply. Further information will be given at the recruitment stage.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to Austrian employment law.
